The Rock Garden

SUBJECT & CONTEXT

I loooved discovering the Rock Garden of Chandigarh - built in secret by Nek Chand starting in 1957 from reclaimed construction debris and household scrap, and later formalized and opened to the public in 1976. It’s a linked maze of courtyards, sculptures, and water features assembled entirely from cast-off materials. A few weeks after I photographed it, I learned the site would be cleared for a highway, making those pictures even more special.
