The Capitol Complex

Concrete stairs at the Capitol Complex, Chandigarh
[BEHIND THE SHOT]
SUBJECT & CONTEXT

Chandigarh was conceived under India’s first President, R. Prasad (in office 1950–1962), with Prime Minister J. Nehru championing it as a symbol of modern India. Le Corbusier (proud moment for any Swissie) took over the master plan in 1951 after the earlier 1949 - 50 scheme by Albert Mayer and Matthew Nowicki was dropped. It was built mainly through the 1950s - 60s, and the city’s sector grid and Capitol Complex clearly define its identity.

My favourite piece: The Open Hand, Chandigarh’s civic emblem, designed by Le Corbusier, himself.
It symbolizes being “open to give and open to receive” - a statement of exchange, peace, and public spirit. It sits in the Capitol Complex and (supposed to) turns with the wind.
